Aerosol Technology : Properties, Behavior, and Measurement of Airborne Particles
Published in Hardcover by Wiley-Interscience (January, 1999)
Author: William C. Hinds
Average review score:

The essential work to understanding aerosols
As the New Testament is to Christians and the Torah is to Jews, this work is the essential literature to understanding aerosols and aerosol technology. You enter as a novice with human explanations of terms, proceed through most of the mundate and requisite statistics, and then are allowed to explode through the fascination that is aerosols. Through comprehensive, yet comprehensable language, this is the first and only way to understand what has previously been an elusive and disperse knowledge. Each edition incorporates current tech and thought. A best, first.

Excellent guide to aerosol behavior in various applications!
Excellent guide to particle behaviour...I am involved in research where an indepth understanding of aerosol behavior is a must in electrostatic powder coating and separation. This is an excellent resource and should be a part of your professional collection.

Please write one more, Dr. Hinds!
How is the aerosol from hair spray related to a carbonated drink or a sponge? It all has to do with what is finely dispersed and what medium suspends this dispersion. With these provoking thoughts, William C. Hinds leads us into the partculars of suspended particles: aerosols. Dr. Hinds has accomplished an amazing feat here. Understanding this complicated field requires familiarity with at least one year of college calculus. With an eloquent writing style laced with differentials and derivations, he describes the various phenomena of aerosols, including particle settling speed, respirability, light scattering, dust explosions, and much more. His description of aerosol measurement techniques is interesting and detailed. (You would be surprised at how complicated are the physics of filtration!) What is truly special, however, is his ability to effectively describe in words what the equations are saying. You can grasp a feel for the phenomena described even if some of the differentials leave you stumped. With problems (and their answers--NOT solutions!) at the end of each chapter, this is an ideal text for graduate students in public health, engineering, industrial hygiene, or toxicology. Professionals working in these fields, however, will find the book a valuable reference. The text is filled with helpful tables and figures, and the more rigorous proofs of important formulas are presented in appendices. References end each chapter.

Already 15 years old, the book remains a benchmark. Oh--and the sponge? The disperse phase is air, the suspending medium is solid. Hmm.

Bearskin: A Grimm Tale
Published in Paperback by thecomic.com (01 June, 1998)
Author: Gareth Hinds
Average review score:

A wonderful retelling of a classic story
The Bearskin story has always been one of my personal favorites, and this new retelling captures the story perfectly. The art is wonderfully expressive with an incredible display of shadows and emotions. I'm glad that this particular story was chosen, as it's often overlooked in favor of more famous stories. This book would make a great introduction to the story, and is equally exciting for those already familiar.

Amazing New Talent
BEARSKIN is, simply, a fairy tale brought to life. The tale is told with marvelous economy and coherence: a wealth of subtle detail, not an element out of line, merged seamlessly and effortlessly with an archetypal storyline. The art is gorgeous and distinctive, with the kind of style that invites close examination and pits eagerness to see what happens next against the desire to pore over each page.

This is what fairy tales--and, more than that, storytelling--are meant to be. Absolutely worth a look. Comic book-adaptations of old stories are a dime a dozen, but this one is worth its weight in gold.

I can't wait to see more of Hinds' work. Fortunately I checked out his web page, and more is forthcoming (and some is available online).

Wow!
This is an excellent and very entertaining retelling of the Brothers Grimm story "Bearskin." The art is ultra-clean, and very consistent throughout. The characters appear exaggerated to the point of being perfectly archetypal for the Grimm genre, and yet somehow it doesn't read as cliche'. Very enjoyable!

But what really amazes me is the quality of what appears to be this illustrator's first work. Perhaps this is just his first national release? In any case, it's a hell of a comic.

The bio in the inside cover points to both his web site (thecomic.com) which is also very good, and also to another book in the works (Beowulf). I can't wait! Mr. Hinds -- would you please finish it by next Christmas?

Bravo!

The Hunt for the Albemarle: Anatomy of a Gunboat War
Published in Hardcover by White Mane Publishing Co. (01 February, 2002)
Author: John W. Hinds
Average review score:

Well worth the wait!
I waited over a year for this sequel to Invasion and Conquest of North Carolina: Anatomy of a Gunboat War to become available. Being from Elizabeth City, NC, Lt. Flusser's exploits were of great interest to me. (He played a major role in the Battle of Elizabeth City.) I was surprised to find out how much action took place on the local waterways during the war. The best part of the book is the emphasis on the people involved in the action. You get to know the characters personally. They become real.

Rich and Wonderful Book!
This is a unique and fascinating book about the most successful Confederate ironclad of the Civil War. The book is rich with detail, much of which has never been seen before. Being a resident of Plymouth, NC where the events took place, my reader's copy of this book is filled with highlighted text that reveals facts that had not been brought to light, including never before published letters between Commander Cooke and his wife!

Mr. Hinds provides a new perspective by focusing on the personalities of the opposing naval commanders as well as the events that forever changed people's lives. Have you ever read a non-fiction book and wondered what happened to the characters later in life? Well Mr. Hinds does a great job of telling the "rest of the story", not only the major players, but also many of the minor characters.

This is a timely written book since a replica of the CSS Albemarle was recently launched in Plymouth and there is renewed interest in the subject. I highly recommend the book!

A GREAT READ
A great "story" based on obviously a thoroughly researched topic. I knew little about the subject at first, which is why it got my attention. My wife was also a little incredulous at first, but then we realised it was all factually based. I will be looking out for this author's next book.

I also wonder if this book will turn up as a swashbuckling movie down the road. I plan on sending copies as presents to friends who love history based books. It makes one want to go to the Carolinas to check out the scene - perhaps we have our next vacation destination determined.

Infinite Elvis: An Annotated Bibliography
Published in Paperback by Chicago Review Press (December, 2000)
Authors: Mary Hancock Hinds and Mary Hancock Hinds
Average review score:

Enhanced with more than 1,700 verified entries
Mary Hinds' Infinite Elvis: An Annotated Bibliography offers her readers a precise measurement of the impact Elvis Presley has had on the American popular culture both as a performer and as an icon. The informative, reader friendly text is enhanced with more than 1,700 verified entries ranging from biographies to discographies, fiction to travel guides, poetry to comic books, major articles to dissertations. Here documented are his concerts, his eating habits, posthumous Elvis sightings, how his death changed the media's treatment of celebrities, even how a new religion devoted to Elvis emerged to become part of mainstream America. Infinite Elvis is essential reading and a very highly recommended reference for all personal, academic, and community library popular culture, music history, and Elvis Presley reference collections.

Fascinating book
If you could buy only one Elvis book, this is the one. Far more than just a listing of the books on Elvis, it is a great study of American culture and how we reacted to Elvis.

Ground-breaking, useful and fun to read
One of the most intelligent and well-written books about Elvis Presley. Hinds proves her theory - that Elvis is one of the most impactful individuals in the last half of the 20th century - in a thorough, effective manner that is entertaining as well. Her writing is a delight to read! She covers every aspect of Elvis' impact through almost everything that has ever been written about him. Very useful, as well as fun to read.

Mount st Helens: The Eruption and Recovery of a Volcano
Published in Paperback by Sasquatch Books (May, 2000)
Authors: Rob Carson and Geff Hinds
Average review score:

Don't mistreat the pictures
An excellent book, completely readable and very informative. I visited the devastated area by chopper within a year after the big one, and Carson's book told me that a lot of the interpretations I heard in 1981 are no longer considered valid. I particularly enjoyed the appraisal of Weyerhauser's tree farms vs natural reforestation. There are favorable points for both, and it's essentially a matter of choosing the scientific or the industrial benefits. I bought the book at the Monument (Forest Service, not Park Service) and reading it while I was there made it all the more exciting. My only complaint: the page layouts. Too many tall, narrow pictures are printed across the binding. Photos of these dimensions would easily fit on a single page, and their impact and beauty are diminished when so much of them is buried in the binding. Possibly this flaw would be less objectionable in a sewn hardcover edition. Also, pictures are often printed as insets in larger photos -- which suggests to me that the book design was considered more important than the photographs. The illustrations are great complements to a splendid text, and they deserve kinder treatment.

An American volcano captured in photographic glory.
The eruption of Mt. St. Helens is captured in photographic glory for any who would learn about the explosion of the volcano and the subsequent recovery of its surrounding environment. Black and white and some color photos accompany extensive descriptions of the eruption, its short- and long-term effects, and environmental changes.

wow wonderful writing!
i love this book and the doofus who thought this book wasnt that great(the one below me) needs to read it again he says it moved quickly to the recovery of the mountain: look at the title! thats what it is about retard.you should recognize a great writer when you see one. humph

Fancywork and Fashion's Best Doll Clothes Book
Published in Paperback by Fancywork & Fashion Press (June, 1997)
Authors: Joan Hinds and Jean Becker
Average review score:

Great for Vintage doll lovers ,too!
I am always looking for doll clothes patterns ,for my dolls as well as my granddaughters dolls. This is a great book for both today's 18" girl dolls and the dolls from the 40s and 50's.
Patterns are in 2 size ranges to fit both slim bodied dolls as well as the average slightly fuller bodied !8" dolls.
Construction is simple and the book is full of tips and methods for cutting bulk in seams, designer detailing and specialty designs.
Maybe if enough interest is generated, the publishers will do another reprint. It's a great companion to The Essential Wardrobe book by the same authors.

A Terrific Book
If you own an 18" doll like the American Girl series, than this book would be wonderful. Of course, you have to enjoy sewing too! The patterns are very easy to make and really fun! I would highly recommend this book-

Gunshots in my Cook-Up
Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, Gunshots in my Cook-Up is a gripping and compelling account of hip hop-the music, the business aspect, and the family and societal life of its aspirants. Hinds is indeed a great storyteller. His narrative of hip hop encounters and his personal life is reminiscent of the Black Griots of antiquity. Gunshots in my Cook-Up is a must read, not only for the hip hop generation, but for all age groups.

simply the best
if you know him from way back in his village voice and source days you know that few writers can touch selwyn seyfu hinds when it comes to honest and intelligent thought on hip-hop, and culture in general. this book is easily the best thing on hip-hop i've ever read, and is one of the best books i've read this year

I bought two copies of this book and received a gift book. This is a beautiful allegory and I found it life changing. Very inspiring and beautifully written.

Spiritual Uplifting
This book has really blessed me inward and outward. I no longer see myself as I did prior to reading this book. I allow God through the Holy Spirit to lead me to the High Places. Now I have my 10 year old daughter reading the booking and she is getting blessed by it as well.

Hind's Feet on High Places
Published in Hardcover by Barbour & Co (October, 1998)
Authors: Hannah and Hannah Hurnard
Average review score:

Excellent allegory of the believer's walk with God!
Hind's Feet On High Places is a wonderful, beautiful allegory of God's love for each one of us. Although we face many trials along the Christian life, Jesus is always there and will always hear and help us when we cry to Him. He is especially close to the broken-hearted. We can always come to our Chief Shepherd, Jesus Christ, without any fear. Much-Afraid sought the Chief Shepherd early in the morning and late in the evening when her work was done. I believed she sang to Him all through the day too. This too, is our priviledge as children of God. I thank God for such an anointed writer as Hannah Hurnard. This is by far the most beautiful book that I've read. I will read and re-read this book for years to come. I have given it as a gift to friends. To all who long to live a life filled with nothing else but love for God, this is the book to read. And to all who feel that God has abandoned them and that there is no hope of reconciliation, this is the book that God will use to restore you. God bless you as you read it.

The most rewarding book I have ever read.
Anyone who has ever questioned God or wondered why evil exists or why people suffer, must read Hurnard. Having rejected Christianity as a teenager because she felt unloved herself, she was dramatically converted at 19 and was overwhelmed by the intense love of God and His desire for her to love others. Love is the imperative of this allegory, but not a foolish, blind, or too-sweet love; instead, it is a powerful force that heals deformities, overcomes mountains, and compels the human soul to heights never before possible. The Shepherd is not a benign Savior, but a strong and holy Savior who demands sacrifice and gives ultimate joy and peace in return. His unconditional love desires and achieves the best for the beloved. Throughout this allegory, Hurnard dramatically portrays for the reader a life of fulfillment beyond typical spiritual mediocrity - a life that she is insists is attainable. Anyone willing to pursue a deeper relationship with God will find in Hurnard and excellent mentor.

Other than the Bible, my all time favorite Christian book...
I first read this book in college and have introduced it to many, read the children's edition (BEAUTIFUL illustrations - a good devotional book) to my children and since read the complete version to them.

I cannot think of a more powerful allegory illustrating the Christian life. Though most people are familiar with Pilgrim's Progress, in my opinion, this book if even better.

The story is about a girl named "Much-Afraid" who lives in the "Valley of Humiliation". She has a crooked mouth and crooked feet. Though she belongs to the "Fearings" family, she loves the Shepherd with all of her heart and desires to be in His service. She longs to have "hind's feet" and "leap upon the high places" with Him. (see the Psalms for the quote) He tells her that she may have her request, but first He must place the seed of love in her heart - it looks like a thorn.

Her family has planned for her to marry her cousin, "Craven Fear", but "Much-Afraid" doesn't want to and her only way out is to go with the Shepherd.

To reach the High Places, the Shepherd gives "Much-Afraid" two unique companions to help her along the way. They are companions of every Christian who walks the pathway to follow Christ. You must read the book to find out who they are, but be ready for a surprise!

I love this book because it doesn't gloss over what our lives as Christians are like, the challenges we face, and a Biblical account of how we are to proceed - that following Christ means dying to self to live for Him. This is one of the most beautifully written accounts I have ever read.

Get a copy and read it. It will become one of your most treasured possessions. Then read the sequel, "Mountain of Spices" where "Much-Afraid", who has been given a new name, returns to the valley to show the love of the Shepherd to her family and friends.

TERIFFIC BOOKS!
